MAKING SPACE FOR THE WORK ONLY YOU CAN DO

We make space for the purpose-driven work we are most uniquely positioned to take on when we acknowledge the full universe of what is actually taking up our time and energy and calculate the cost.

This is not the first time the tool of delegate, delay, and delete has shown up in the WKBST- and that’s because it’s a tool that works a bit like spring cleaning. So, if you’re noticing that you’re “doing all the things” or have said more than once “it’ll be faster, better, easier if I just do it myself”- here’s your cue to check yourself.

Are you directing your time and energy to the tasks, activities, and dreams that are most impactful for you and our world?

Here are three resources to support you in saying no, handing off, and making space for what you’re meant to be doing.

How to Say No When You’re Already at Capacity (Inc.)
A short and practical article that shares a few strategies for saying “no” — especially when you’re already stretched across work and life. A helpful reminder that protecting capacity sometimes starts with clear boundaries.

How to Delegate Effectively (Harvard Business Review)
One of the behaviors of a trusted leader is delegation. This HBR article offers a simple, thoughtful framework for delegating well — clarifying expectations, responsibility, and ownership. (If you can’t access it, let me know and I’ll find a way to get you a copy.)

Why Leaders Struggle to Delegate (Podcast Episode)
A great listen that explores what often holds leaders back from delegation — identity, control, and trust. It offers a practical look at how leaders can consciously shift toward sharing ownership and building stronger teams.

THE PRACTICE

During this time of the year, I like to start asking clients what’s on deck for them over the course of the year. Here’s the process:

  1. Block the time you plan to take for holidays/vacations between now and December 31.

  2. List all of the deadlines, travel, and commitments you know you already have in your work and personal life.

  3. Reflect:

  • Do you have too much, too little, or just the right amount of commitments considering your existing capacity (capacity= time + energy)

  • What do you need to delete, delay, or delegate in order to add to your capacity?

  • What do you need in order to stay really focused on what matters most to you this year?
